THE PROGRAM

Realtime Reporting & Captioning

Embracing cutting-edge technology, today's realtime reporters use computers and a specialized machine called a stenotype to capture and convert the spoken word into readable formats.

Reporters are in higher demand today than ever before. When the FCC rule that 100% of new TV programming must be captioned went into effect, the demand for court reporters exploded. The U.S. Dept. of Labor projects a 25% increase in employment opportunities for court reporters through 2016.

Golden State's program provides the knowledge and skills needed to be an immediate asset to the reporting industry. You'll receive training in realtime reporting, writing at 225 words per minute! The program provides you with a general background in law, medical terminology and anatomy. You'll receive extensive coverage of English skills and grammar. Your education will serve as a foundation if you choose to pursue certification as a Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) by the State of California, or pursue your RPR given by the NCRA.

On the job, you can either work in a professional environment interacting with others, or work in the privacy of your own home eliminating a commute. In judicial settings, you will be an officer of the court and the key person responsible for guarding the record and accurately preserving history as it happens.

Upon completion of the course and certification by the state, you'll be able to choose from many CAREER PATHS. The possibilities are endless!

Whichever road a realtime reporter might choose, it promises to be a worthwhile journey where one can contribute to one's profession and earn the kind of money to make dreams come true.
